ONE BAG OF BLOOD

Project type

installation

Date

2002

Location

Augusta, Maine

After the NYC bombing of 9/11 I felt helpless. What could I do as an artist? The news broadcasted requests by emergency services for donations of blood. As an artist I felt that my art could serve somehow even if it was in a small way. So I wrote the Lord's Prayer in Chinese calligraphy over and over with mud from the Kennebec River onto the tile floor of Jewett Hall Gallery, University of Maine at Augusta. By carrying the dried mud on their shoes as the viewers left the building, the prayers were quietly sowed throughout the community. The performance component of the piece was performed by three performers writing numbers onto the glass walls with mud. The numbers represent people who died from wars.
