PHANTOM PAIN
Project type
installation
Date
2006-2007
Location
Waterville, Maine
This installation is composed of three elements each at different locations on Colby College campus.
The cube on Johnson Pond is printed with the artist's notes on Phantom Pain.
Projected onto the glass vestibule doors of The Colby College Museum of Art is a short film portraying a toddler walking with the assistance of her mother. Although the film plays continuously throughout the day and evening, it can only be seen at night when darkness falls, like dreams that only come at night. Dreams of possibilities, of what could have been.
Upon entering the Davis Gallery you see the muslin butterfly (28'x24'x40') in front of you and suspended from the ceiling above, emerging from its chrysalis - my legs cast in transparent glass. Playing continuously is an audio recording of my mother's gentle voice, speaking in Taiwanese, describing my life before and after contracting polio.
